American Me

Yo soy una Americana viviendo en los Estado Unidos! Who am I kidding here? I’m an American woman born of Puerto Rican parents in good ole Newark (Nork), NJ, the stolen car capital of America.Yes, my car was stolen twice but that was years ago. And No, I’m not here to give Newark a bad name. It does that all on it’s own.

But seriously though, I am who I am because I was raised in Newark. You see,  my Newark experiences, were nothing like what you might imagine. I had a pleasant childhood. My parents were working class poor and even though they made a combined income of $38,000 back in 1993, they raised a family of six and even managed to buy a two family house, which I affectionally labeled “The Money Pit”.

Pleasant, that’s right! It was pleasant growing up in Newark. My parents owned a house; I had a yard, a dog, and the meanest teachers a public education could provide. Fortunately, my mother with all her wisdom, sent me and my siblings to St. Lucy’s School to tame us from the start. Then, she sent us to public school. With Religion, controling parents and my mom who encouraged us to do every afterschool program possible, “If it’s free, we’re doing it,” she would say, we had a childhood worth writing about.

So there it is! My fondest childhood memories for your entertainment mixed in with my imagination.

Until Next Time
